Leanne Fan is a high school researcher, environmental advocate, and inventor from San Diego. She was named America's Top Young Scientist and rang the New York Stock Exchange Opening Bell for her invention of the Finsen Headphones, a prototype that detects and treats mid-ear infections using acoustic reflectometry, machine learning, and phototherapy. Fan strives to provide a low cost and non-medicinal ear infection treatment in place of antibiotics for kids to prevent hearing loss, control the infection before surgery is needed, and reduce the spread of antibiotic resistance. After learning that wounds in space don't heal, Fan researched the use of photobiomodulation to heal wounds in microgravity and on earth. Fan also encourages science and art in her community and in younger children by promoting her local science fair and teaching children science at science expos. She is a director of Clearwater Innovation, a nonprofit that seeks to raise awareness about the global water crisis by encouraging garage lab research, increasing student environmental public policy engagement, and holding environmental art competitions.
