A.I. is driving the energy demands of datacenters up an extreme growth curve. On present track, datacenters in the US could consume 8% of all electricity by 2030. This crisis is an opportunity for the semiconductor industry, if we can move fast enough to improve the energy efficiency of the chips that AI requires. Such improvements are possible via innovations in device architecture, materials, processes, and systems. The technology challenges associated with them are too complex and too expensive to be mastered by working in isolation. In this presentation, Prabu Raja, PhD, President, Semiconductor Products Group for Applied Materials, outlines the imperative to come together to drive collaborative innovation to seize the AI efficiency opportunity in a timely way.
