Dr. John T. Gaskins is co-founder and CEO of Laser Thermal, a Charlottesville, Virginia based company innovating and manufacturing the next generation of thermal metrology solutions. He received his B.S. in Civil Engineering and his M.E. and Ph.D. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the University of Virginia. Following his Ph.D., he joined Dr. Patrick Hopkins’ ExSiTE Lab group at the University of Virginia focusing on measurements of thermal properties of small-scale materials and devices utilizing laser-based techniques. It was during this time he and Dr. Hopkins came up with the technologies that now serve as the basis for their company, Laser Thermal. Since its start in 2021, Dr. Gaskins has grown Laser Thermal to 18 full time employees by providing thermal measurement tools, contract testing, and materials selection and device optimization services to many of the largest semiconductor companies in the world, academic institutions, and stakeholders across the Department of Defense. He has authored over 70 peer reviewed journal papers and has ten patents published or pending. Dr. Gaskins serves as a member of several industry groups and boards, led Laser Thermal as the 2023 Charlottesville Business Innovation Council’s Start-up of the Year, and was recognized last year as the University of Virginia Engineering’s Outstanding Young Engineering Graduate, honoring a recent graduate under 40 for their contributions to the advancement of technology and engineering post- graduation.
