To tackle future ADAS and software-defined functionalities, the automotive industry is faced with a multi-dimensional problem to solve: provide higher and flexible compute power without impacting range and end-product affordability (too much). The one dimension yet all have seemed to forget is that the automotive industry has historically and euphemistically never been very friendly to new, or better said, unproven technologies. Chiplets-based SoCs for automotive applications are today the most blatant example of such a technology field. On one hand providing a huge number of technical opportunities for automotive OEM to create customer-friendly and scalable solutions for compute power. On the other hand, yet completely new for automotive applications and intrinsically requiring to painfully compromise the technical solution space in an increasingly consolidating and competitive, and therefore sometimes/somehow inefficient stakeholder field. We will explore in this presentation what can first be done to reconcile chiplets-based SoC solution space with OEM technical compute power and scalability needs and most importantly paranoia of the “unknown” and a timely market introduction.
